What happened to offline games?

Today I felt like playing a video games. These occasions are rare recently. Here is what followed...

I turned on the XBox, and looked at the list of games I have already purchased. I looked at Tunic and thought, ahh yes, this is what I am looking for.

So I open it up. Then I am presented with a popup that says, you need to be online to play this game, for what is an entirely offline game. This is not something I thought I needed, so I thought, I'll play Hollow Knight instead. Same popup. Going online isn't that bad, may as well to play something good, so I type in type in my wifi password. The screen goes black right away with a loading spinner that lasts aroung 5 minutes. After the spinner is gone, then I am presented with 3 options. Install a 4Gb update, Go offine or turn off the console.

A little frustrated I take the 4Gb update option, because the other options mean just not playing anything really. My rural internet is slow so this is going to be a long one. So I actually sit down to write this post. It gets worse. After a long wait and a few percentage points of download, it stops and says there is an error. The try again option doesn't work, and yet again for whatever reasont they want me to turn off the console as an option. This happens twice more.

On the third, I turn off the console and pick up a book.

This is our fault really. Why are we okay with just accepting the idea that you need to be online 24/7? Or that you can't just sit and get immersed in a game without the popup parade? Is it too much to ask to be able to play single player games I have purchased and downloaded offline?

Anyway small rant over. I'll just go back to reliable media that respects my time.
